Amish Friendship Bread Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 c. live yeast starter from your friend
- Day 6 ingredients:
- 1 c flour
- 1 c sugar
- 1 c milk
- Day 10 ingredients:
- 1 c flour
- 1 c sugar
- 1 c milk
- Final Bread Ingredients:
- 1 c oil
- 1/2 c milk
- 3 eggs
- 1 t vanilla
- In separate bowl: 2 c flour 1 c sugar 1 1/2 t baking powder 1/2 t baking soda 1 box (5.1 oz) instant vanilla pudding 1/2 t salt 1 c nuts
- 2 c flour
- 1 c sugar
- 1 1/2 t baking powder
- 1/2 t baking soda
- 1 box (5.1 oz) instant vanilla pudding
- 1/2 t salt
- 1 c chopped nuts (optional, use any type)
- 1 c raisins, dried cranberries or other chopped dried fruit (optional)
Directions
Follow this progression with your starter:
Day 1 - do nothing
Days 2-5 - stir the starter with a wooden spoon
Day 6 - add the ingredients listed. Mix with wooden spoon.
Days 7-9 - stir with wooden spoon.
Day 10 - Add Day 10 ingredients. Stir. Remove 3 cups of the starter and place 1 cup into three separate plastic containers. Give each one to a friend. Take the remaining cup of starter and add the final bread ingredients.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix and pour into two well-greased and sugared bread pans. Bake at 325 for 1 hour.
Additional Tips
Don't use metal spoons or bowls (only use wood, glazed ceramic, plastic, or glass). Don't refrigerate the starter.
